The Tree: From the Sublime to Social

The Vancouver Art Gallery  hosted ‘The Tree: From the Sublime to the Social’, encompassing the work of 40 artists. The VAG presented the exhibition that included a documentary on Reyes’ community art project Palas por Pistolas.  Here, Mexican school children are seen planting a tree on the edge of an urban wasteland. Strathcona’s McLean Park saw a replication of the ritual in the Spring of 2008.  Small crowds of locals, including children and adults, gathered on a cold and damp day to actively participate in the project, by taking turns depositing earth around the newly planted tree.  The VAG not only acquired a shovel as part of their art collection but also the tree from McLean Park.  They had to modify their policy for acquiring, collecting and preserving art works since the tree is a living object; they decided to become guardians of the tree in the same way that they do with the rest of the artworks in their collection. Palas por Pistolas tree planting ceremony was a fitting piece for the exhibition that explores the subject of trees and their various representations over the past century, and as an essential element in the in the dialogue between nature and culture.     La Galería de Arte de Vancouver organizó “The Tree: From the Sublime to the Social” eposición que abarca la obra de más de 40 artistas. La Galería presentó dicha exposición, la cual incluía un documental sobre el proyecto de Reyes: Palas por Pistolas, donde se pueden contemplar estudiantes mexicanos plantando un árbol en el borde de un desierto ubano. El parque Strathcona’s McLean fue partícipe del proyecto al ser punto de reunión para una multitude de lugareños, incluyendo niños y adultos, ddvió una réplica de este ritual en la primavera de 2008. Se trató de una pequeña multitud reunida en un día frío y húmedo para la colaborar en el proyecto. Por turnos, cada persona colaboraba en el depósito de tierra para plantar el árbol. Así fue como la Galería de Vancouver no sólo adquirió una pala como parte de su colección de arte o un árbol en el parque Strathcona’s McLean, sino que también tuvo que modificar sus políticas de adquisición, recolección y conservación de obras, pues el árbol es un objeto vivo, decidiendo así, ser guardianes de los árboles de la misma manera que los son para las obras de arte su colección. Palas Por Pistolas Tree Planting Ceremony  fue una pieza de montaje de la exposición sobre árboles y sus diversas representaciones en el siglo pasado, como un elemento esencial en el diálogo entre naturaleza y cultura.
